Financial Information

Tuition & Fees
A full-time student, if not an Arizona resident before applying to the University, pays $10,806 tuition per academic year, and an additional $5,544 in registration fees. The full cost of tuition and at least 90% of the registration fees are waived for students who serve as teaching or research assistants, as described below. For additional information on fees and fee schedules, visit the Bursar’s Office website. Note that the tuition and fees described above are for the 2007-08 academic year and they may change in future years. The University charges various additional fees as well, which amount to between $100 and $300 per year.
Financial Aid & Assistantships
Assistantships and fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis. Assistantships provide a stipend of $15,176 per year. Most first-year students who are awarded an assistantship are awarded a $1,000 or $2,000 fellowship as well, to help offset the costs of relocating and setting up housekeeping. This brings their first-year income to $17,176.
Assistantships include a 100% waiver of tuition and a 90% waiver of the $5,544 in registration fees. Additional fee waivers are often available for the remaining 10% of the registration fees.
After his or her first year in the program every student who is making satisfactory progress toward the Ph.D. degree receives full assistantship funding in return for providing either research or teaching assistance to a faculty member. Most students supplement this by teaching one or more courses in the summer session and/or the winter session between semesters. This teaching brings many of our advanced students’ annual incomes to $20,000 or more while they are completing the degree.
